Low-Income Taxpayer Clinics

Our legal team at Carver Law Office, PLLC understands how frustrating and stressful it can be when you have to deal with legal matters involving the IRS. That is why we have dedicated our practice to representing clients throughout Oklahoma who need advice resolving tax issues. Last month, we covered IRS procedures that former U.S. citizens need to know to obtain relief for back taxes. This month, we are going to tell you about the benefits of using Low-Income Taxpayer Clinics (LITCs).

What Is a Low-Income Taxpayer Clinic?

In 1998, Congress enacted Low Income Taxpayer Clinics as part of the IRS Restructuring and Reform Act. There are 134 clinics in the United States. LITCs represent individuals whose income is below a certain level and need to resolve tax controversies with the IRS, such as auditsappeals, and tax collection disputes. In addition, clinics can provide information about taxpayer rights and responsibilities in different languages for individuals who speak English as a second language.

Between 2012 and 2016, more than 52,400 low-income taxpayers have been represented by LITCs in IRS controversies. During this same period, LITCs provided educational services for more than 450,000 low-income taxpayers who speak English as a second language.

In order to take advantage of the services provided by LITCs, your income can’t exceed 250% of the federal poverty level. You are also eligible to use a LITC if you speak English as a second language.

Experienced Legal Counsel for Your Tax Matters

If you pay taxes and are summoned by the IRS, you have the right to retain representation to guide you through interactions with the IRS. LITCs protect this crucial right for eligible low-income individuals by providing access to representation.

If you can’t afford to hire a private attorney to handle your IRS dispute, visit https://taxpayeradvocate.irs.gov/about/litc to find a clinic near you.
